Drummer Brian Blade has worked with some of the biggest names in American folk – Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell – and in jazz - Wayne Shorter and Pat Metheny. But he also has his own adventurous jazz group, Brian Blade and The Fellowship band. He joins us to talk about their latest album, Season of Changes.

Pianist Simone Dinnerstein 's 2007 recording of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" became an unlikely hit, topping the Billboard classical charts, reaching No. 3 on the Amazon charts, and for a time, leading iTunes in downloads. This summer she releases her follow-up CD, "The Berlin Concert," and tonight she performs at Le Poisson Rouge, the new concert venue in Greenwich Village. She performs live for us today in the studio.

But Festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo, and the inaugural Rothbury Festival are all are trying to adapt green practices, from solar-powered stages to recycling and biodegradable concession products. Today, we debate the effectiveness of these changes, and ask whether artists practice what they preach. At a press conference for his new Crosby Stills Nash & Young documentary, Neil Young told reporters that “the time when music could change the world is past.” It’s time for science and spirituality so save the planet, the 62-year-old songwriter added. Perhaps Young is on to something. Or perhaps music plays an indirect role in social or political change. Tim Riley, music commentator for NPR's "Here and Now" and author of "Fever: How Rock 'n' Roll Transformed Gender in America" joins us.
